Who Hasn't Had At Least One Crappy Christmas?
Christmas Day comes with a lot of hype and anticipation. But, it doesn’t always turn out very merry.
It was my first year out of college. I was living in a one room “efficiency” apartment. I had a low paying job. I was a long way from home. I was driving an eleven year old Ford LTD. And, that’s when the storm of the decade hit - just two days before Christmas.
The temps dropped to 20 below. The roads were barely passable. And, my 8 cylinder monster wasn’t about to start without a visit from AAA roadside assistance. There was no way I’d be home for Christmas.
I called my friend, Perry (who lived nearby) to see what he was doing, and he invited me over. So, I made my way through white-out conditions to his house.
Now, here’s where the story actually gets bright — for a minute. Perry came from a big Italian family. And, they could not have been more welcoming. They introduced me to the Christmas Eve feast of the seven fishes (which was fabulous). And, I was around family — just not MY family.
That night Perry set me up with an inflatable mattress in the basement “bachelor pad” of his parent’s house. And, I settled in for a long winter’s nap. When what to my wonderment dripped on my head, but a broken water pipe directly over my bed. Shit!
We spent Christmas day mopping up water, making plumbing repairs and waiting outdoors (freezing our asses off) for the tow truck to come get my car started.
The Relevant Man recognizes that sometimes Santa shows, and sometimes the day just blows. We just need to be appreciative for the good ones, and keep on mopping (or shoveling) through the tough ones.
